Have you heard?
The Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign (SPSC) has proposed on its website to infringe the true nature of Holocaust Memorial Day (January 28, 2007), causing even those who might be considered fellow-travellers in their demonising of Israel to baulk at using the memorial to the victims of the Holocaust as a weapon to attack the Jewish state. Barry Levine and Henry Maitles of Glasgow, in their own way no mean critics of Israel, have taken the SPSC to task over its ill-conceived plans. In a letter to the Socialist Worker, Levine and Maitles describe the SPSC ploy as “unfortunate” and “a mistake” and have called for “the SPSC to reconsider its plans, engage with other groups and make the event truly inclusive”. Scotland’s Jewish community may not, normally, find much political agreement with Levine and Maitles, but, as with them, we recognise that deliberate misinterpretation of the Holocaust does not counter fascism. It simply reinforces it.
