Palestinian FlagText of the Cairo Declaration by Palestinians
The Associated Press
Thursday, March 17, 2005; 5:29 PM

The following is the text of declaration issued by 13 Palestinian groups issued Thursday at the end of three days of meetings in this satellite city of Cairo.

The text refers to the "Judaization" of Jerusalem, meaning the settling of Israelis in east Jerusalem, which Palestinians regard as the capital of their future state. It also refers to changing the Palestinian election law to allow for "an equal division (of seats) in a mixed system." This means the law will change so that half of the Palestinian assembly is elected on a constituency basis and half by proportional representation. more...

ADL Condemns Rabbi Declaration That Condones Harming Palestinan Civilians (Israel)

• On September 9, 2004 the Anti-Defamation League issued a press release that reported, "The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) strongly condemned the recent call by rabbis connected to West Bank and Gaza (YESHA) rabbinic councils and yeshivas urging the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) not to avoid harming Palestinian civilians in their fight against terror. ADL's Israel Office issued the following statement:

"...The citizens of Israel have for too long experienced cruel terrorist atrocities and daily threats that indeed must be dealt with forcefully. However, we mourn along with the majority of Israelis the injury and loss of any and all innocent civilians during the course of battle, regardless of national identity or religion. As in the past when similar statements were made by some rabbis and religious leaders, we remind ourselves and take pride in the fact that the IDF takes great pains to minimize civilian loss of life —often at its own peril and many times with tragic results. This is a military and moral doctrine that should make all Jews proud and earn the respect of all individuals and nations who value life."

MK Rabbi Michael MelchiorRemarks of Deputy Foreign Minister Rabbi Michael Melchior at Israel Solidarity Rally

We did not choose to fight this dreadful war. To the contrary, the last Israeli Government, of which I was a member, made far-reaching peace proposals, recognizing that without secure borders for the
Palestinians, there can be no secure borders for Israel; without dignity for the Palestinian people there can be no true dignity for Israelis; and without peace for the Palestinians, there can be none for Israel.

And these truths hold today. We are not fighting the Palestinian people. We continue to respect their aspirations to
independence. And still today, if the Palestinian leadership is ready
to choose peace and progress, they will find that no people wants
peace, or is prepared to sacrifice more for it, than Israel. more...

After being elected to the Knesset in 1999, Melchior was appointed by then prime minister Ehud Barak as minister for Israeli society and the world Jewish community. He later became deputy foreign minister in the first Sharon government.

Danish-born Melchior has served as Chief Rabbi of Norway and is the international director of the Elie Wiesel Foundation. more...
